What's New at Eagle Village?
January 7, 2014
Happy New Year!
Most of us have been making resolutions and planning out the year 2014 and what we’re going to contribute to it. Our resolutions generally involve healthier eating, losing weight, spending more time with family or spending less money. This year, we encourage you to also include giving back to our community by mentoring a youth at Eagle Village.
January is National Mentoring Month and here at Eagle Village we have at a minimum fifty to sixty young people who could use an extra positive influence in their lives. Right now, male mentors are a great need. We also have other volunteer opportunities across campus. Contact Lisa Spaugh at 231-832-6589 or firstname.lastname@example.org for information.
We have found that positive mentor relationships increase the number of successes our youth have in their program. Having someone other than staff assuring, encouraging and supporting our residents has proven to be a very good way to bring about change in behavior and attitude. Mentors can play a powerful role in providing young people with the tools to make responsible decisions, stay focused and engaged in school, and reduce or avoid behavior that works against their program goals. It’s wonderful to see a youth graduating from MITI or performing in the Christmas program and watch them glance over at their mentor who has attended for a smile and encouragement.
Our mentors are helping us Change Tomorrow Together. Mentoring relationships are basic human connections that let a young person know that they matter, and mentors frequently report back that their relationships make them feel like someone who matters in another person’s life.
We thank you for your support in 2013 and look forward to a successful and fulfilling 2014. And remember, this year make a difference in a young person’s life and become a mentor!
